Sauna Installation 101: Electrical & Space Requirements

Buying the sauna is the easy part — installation is where projects stall out. Electrical requirements, clearance space, and ventilation needs vary a lot between infrared and traditional units, and getting them wrong can mean an expensive rework. Here’s what to plan for before delivery day.

Electrical Requirements by Sauna Type

Most 1-2 person infrared cabins run on a standard 120V/15-20 amp household outlet, which is why they’re popular for renters and apartment dwellers — no electrician needed. Larger infrared units (3+ person) and nearly all traditional electric saunas need a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 30-50 amps depending on heater wattage, installed by a licensed electrician at $200-$800 depending on how far the circuit has to run from your panel. Wood-burning saunas skip electrical requirements entirely but need proper chimney clearance and often a permit. Always check your specific heater’s spec sheet before assuming — undersizing the circuit is a common and expensive mistake.

Clearance and Space Planning

Beyond the sauna’s footprint, plan for at least 6 inches of clearance behind and beside the unit for ventilation, and more if the manufacturer specifies it — check the manual, since requirements vary by heater wattage. You’ll also need clear door swing space (saunas almost always open outward) and enough room in the surrounding area to move around comfortably once you factor in benches, towel hooks, and a small bench or stool outside for cooling down. Ceiling height matters too: most cabins need 78-84 inches of clearance, which rules out low-ceiling basements and some garages without modification. Measure twice before you order — returns on assembled units are expensive and often not offered at all.

Ventilation and Flooring

A small vent gap near the floor and another near the ceiling keeps air circulating and prevents the cabin from feeling stuffy — most manufactured units come with this built in, but if you’re building custom, don’t skip it. The room housing the sauna should tolerate moisture and heat: tile, sealed concrete, or vinyl flooring work well, while carpet and untreated hardwood do not hold up over time. Traditional saunas with water/steam add humidity to the equation, so a nearby floor drain or at least a moisture-tolerant surface is worth planning for. If you’re installing in a basement or enclosed room, a small exhaust fan can help manage humidity between sessions and extend the life of both the sauna and the room around it.
