A sauna is a long-term investment, and like anything that combines heat, moisture, and wood, it needs regular upkeep to stay safe and last as long as it should. The good news is that maintenance is mostly simple habits rather than major work. Here’s what to do weekly, monthly, and seasonally.
Weekly and After-Each-Use Care
After each session, wipe down benches with a damp cloth to remove sweat before it soaks into the wood, and prop the door open to let the cabin air out and dry completely. For infrared units, a quick wipe of the heater panels keeps dust from building up and burning off the next time they heat up. Traditional saunas with a bucket and ladle should have any spilled water wiped from the floor to prevent standing moisture. This five-minute routine is the single biggest factor in how long your sauna’s wood surfaces last.
Monthly Deep Cleaning
Once a month, give the wood a proper cleaning with a mild sauna-safe cleaner or a mix of water and a small amount of vinegar — avoid harsh chemicals, which can leave residue that off-gasses when the wood heats up. Sand down any rough or darkened spots on the benches with fine-grit sandpaper to keep skin contact surfaces smooth. Check and vacuum the heater’s vents or stones (for traditional units) to clear dust and debris, and inspect the door seal and hinges for wear. If you have a steam or water-based sauna, descale the water reservoir to prevent mineral buildup.
Seasonal and Long-Term Care
Once or twice a year, check the heater’s electrical connections and, for electric heaters, have a professional inspect the wiring if you notice flickering or unusual smells. Reapply a food-grade or sauna-safe wood sealant to exposed exterior surfaces if your unit lives somewhere with humidity swings, though most interior benches should stay unsealed so they can breathe. Replace sauna rocks every 1-2 years for traditional heaters, since repeated heating and cooling cause them to crack and lose efficiency. Finally, keep an eye on the door gasket and any weatherstripping, replacing it if you notice heat escaping — a properly sealed cabin heats faster and uses less energy.
